My first documentary
June 16, 2007I had some time ago visited Montreal and interviewed Rod Vienneau, spokesman for the Duplessis Orphans and some of the orphans themselves. These orphans had been in orphanages at the time of Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis. He was responsible for ordering that orphanages overnight become mental hospitals and the childen in them to be mental patients. The psychiatrists obligingly labelled normal children as mentally retarded to make this change look legal. The underlying reason for this? Quebec got three times as much in federal funding for a mental patient than for an orphan. These children were drugged, given ECT and in some cases lobotomized.
Since Freedom Magazine had run a series of exposes on these abuses, I put together a short video from my material and submitted it to Freedom. It is now on their YouTube site:
I was very pleased with this as it is my first real effort at a documentary. I used the skills I have been learning on Avid and Premiere Pro and also the technology from the Art Book by L. Ron Hubbard.
